Jeffrey (Jeff) A. Roach, 58, of Indianapolis passed away December 26, 2013. He was born July 9, 1955 in Indianapolis, IN to Roland and Thelma (Jane) Roach.
Jeff attended grade school at St. Michael's Catholic School on the northwest side of Indianapolis. He graduated from Cardinal Ritter High School in 1973. Jeff graduated from Marian College (University) in 1977 with a B.S. in Business Administration.
Jeff worked as Assistant CFO for the City of Indianapolis in the Department of Metropolitan Development for the past 4 years. Prior to working for the city, he was a Mortgage Loan Originator/Mortgage Broker for Hallmark Home Mortgage and various other companies for almost 20 years. Earlier in his career, after college, Jeff managed indoor and outdoor movie theaters for Cantor Theaters in Indianapolis.
He was a long-time volunteer coordinator for the Indianapolis Fringe Theater Festival, along with his wife, Becki, developing the volunteer program into what it is today. He served on various committees at church and volunteered for several community projects in the city. Jeff has a variety of interests and talents. At an early age, he developed an interest in photography, receiving his first quality camera at the age of 13. He spent times photographing events for this high school newspaper and both high school and college yearbooks. He and Becki eventually went on to develop this passion into a photography business (Roach Photography) and have photographed many weddings throughout the Midwest, as well as special events. He photographed the opening of Victory Field Baseball Stadium in Indianapolis, and his photographs were chosen to be put on a binder that was a special promotional giveaway for the Indianapolis Indians. He has another photograph of Sister Rita from Ritter High School, in a race car that is on exhibit in Washington, DC.
In high school and college, Jeff worked on stage crews for productions requiring lighting, sound and special effects. This was an area he especially enjoyed and strongly considered for a career at times. He also participated in his grade school bands, playing the trombone.
Jeff held a class B license in parachuting. He began this "hobby" in 1978and continued with it for two years. We would have continued longer, but the jump school and airfield he normally used was closed in 1980 and the cost to continue with jumping increased significantly.
Always patriotic, after graduation from college, he applied and was accepted into the U.S. Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School (OCS), in the Electronic Warfare program, where he had to withdrawal after a month due to a pressurization tolerance program that would have kept him out of naval aviation. He therefore applied and was accepted into the U.S. Marine Corp. OSC, but suffered a back sprain that forced him to withdrawal from the OSC class.
Jeff enjoyed music, anything from contemporary Christian to Jazz, Country and Rock N Roll – the louder the better! Anytime Becki was away she would come home to the stereo on full blast and shaking the rafters!
Jeff had an affinity for electronics – stereos, sound systems, microphones, televisions and computers. Every Palm Sunday and Easter Vigil, he would set up a sound system outside the church, sot aht the pastor could conduct ceremonies outside. He was called on to help with the church bells and events in the Parish Life Center at church. Jeff was definitely the "go to" guy for anything electronic.
Jeff loved history and loved to travel. Vacations were often combined with visits to historical sites and learning about our national heritage. He was a font of the most obscure information and trivia you could ever imagine and would often spout facts and figures at the drop of a hat.
His faith has sustained him through a lot of trials and tribulations, especially in this past year. St. Michael Catholic Church has always been a special place for him, where he has been a member for over 50 years, and was the centerpiece of his faith, formation and growth. He went to grade school, made his first communion and confirmation, and was married there; and now his service will be held there. He served on the Parish Council plus numerous committees over the years.
Jeff has been married to his wife, Becki, for 23 years. He was slow at getting around to marriage (it took him 16 years), but once he did, he embraced marriage fully. They were partners not only in marriage, but in every aspect of life enjoying many similar beliefs, interests and hobbies. He grew up with a close knit family and spent much of his childhood with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins getting together for holidays, birthdays and special events, or just to be together, sharing a meal. His brother, Steve, was a major influence in his life, as he and Steve were the best of friends. They shared a love of family, history and spending time together. He was very proud of all his nephews. He had an especially close relationship with his nephews, Trevor, Garrett, Devin, Wade and Wes. He especially enjoyed hearing about Trevor's latest venture into filmmaking and was looking forward to Garrett's army officer commissioning ceremony and graduation next May, and hearing about Devin's adventures at college and his stories of the fraternity house at Lambda Chi. He followed Wade's new army career and was looking to hearing about Wes' experience when he joins the army next year. Christmas each year was spent with his step-sisters, step-nieces and nephews and he always enjoyed the "white elephant" gift exchange and vying for the best gifts!
Jeff was preceded in death by his step-mother, Theresa Roach and step-sister, Patricia Grimes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Rebecca (Becki) Roach; brother, Stephen R. (Carrie) Roach; step-sisters, Nancy Hartmen, Sue (Claude) Zook, Theresa (Jim) Dinn and Mary Petree; step-brother, Joe Murray; sister-in-law, Barbara Denton; nephews, Trevor, Garrett and Devin Roach, Wade and Wes Denton; aunt, Ruthann and Joanne Petit; uncle, Bob Petit and many special cousins, step-nieces and step-nephews.
