Riley Clark Storey was born December 18, 1842, in Vernon, Indiana; his parents were Thomas J. Storey and Jane Vowter.
Riley enlisted in the 18th Indiana Infantry which was being organized at Indianapolis on August 16, 1861. The 18th began active duty with their first battle at Pea Ridge, they then fought at Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River, Vicksburg and Cedar Creek. The regiment mustered out on
August 28, 1865. They lost 204 men during that four year period.
Riley Storey returned to Indiana and married Rose Margaret Schaefer on March 30, 1874. The couple then traveled to California and ended up in San Mateo County where Riley became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic in Redwood City. When he died he was buried in the Grand Army's plot in Union Cemetery.
