Josephine was the daughter of Alexander and Parthenia (Reeve) Silone. She married William Yates 15 Jul 1889 in Cole County, Missouri. Children included Josephine and Blyden. Josephine worked as a teacher.

Josephine was the first black woman to head a college science department (present day Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO from 1886-1889). She was elected third president of the National Association of Colored Women.
