John Robert Morris, 79, of Clovis, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in Greeley, Colo., to Leon Ernest and Cora Edith Moon Morris.
He graduated from Trinidad High School in Colorado. He was drafted into the Army and served as a private in World War II. He received his bachelor’s degree from Colorado University in Boulder. He completed a master’s degree at the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D. at Colorado University.
He married Mary Lee Smith on July 24, 1965, in Denver, Colo. He taught American history, farm organization, labor history and the Civil War and World War II eras. He taught in colleges in Gunnison, Colo., Kearney, Neb., Mesa, Ariz., and Tahlequah, Okla., before joining the faculty at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales as a professor of history in 1967. He retired in 1988.
Family members said he collected an extensive library of books, enjoyed traveling, classical music, reading and watching televised ballgames, particularly the Chicago Cubs.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife; a sister, Mary Louise Marks of Fort Collins, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Therese Morehead of Seattle; three stepsons, Frank and Michael Smith, both of Seattle, and Leonard Smith of Imperial, Neb.; and numerous cousins.
Father John Rollinson will officiate at services.
Burial will follow at the Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Billy Strand, Lester Cleghorn, Dennis Peelle, Raymond Peelle, Adolph Peelle, Abel Montoya, and Daniel Abele.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ENMU scholarship fund in Portales.
