Frances (Sykes) Peikert, 91, passed away at her home on December 23, 2013 after a 15-month battle with cancer.
She resided in Edgewater Park for the past seven years. Previously, she lived in Havertown, PA for 58 years.
Born in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Grace and Guy Sykes. She could trace her ancestry back as far as the 1700s before the American Revolution when an English ship's captain rescued a passenger from his sinking ship, and they eventually married.
She had 12 great uncles who were brothers from Maryland, six of whom fought for the Union and six fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Her ancestry gave her a life-long love of history, which she studied while attending Notre Dame College in Baltimore.
As a young girl living in Ellicott City, MD, she traveled the world with her aunt. While on a cruise to Haiti at age 18, she met the love of her life George, a naturalized citizen from Germany, who was nearly twice her age. Less than two years later they married and had 52 wonderful years together. Frances and George, also a traveler, continued their adventures visiting many countries before he passed away in 1994.
Frances was also predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Carlton and Clara Sykes.
She was a devoted mother to her children and loved to cook and bake for her family. An avid reader, she devoured book after book, especially histories. She loved the shore and spent many vacations with her family on Long Beach Island. Never at a loss for words, she enjoyed talking to relatives, friends, and acquaintances.
Frances is survived by her son Carlton of Folcroft, PA and her daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Richard Zanoni of Edgewater Park. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren David (Maureen), Dr. Brian (Holly), and Kate (Matthew), and her great grandchildren Marie, Alana, and Bryce, all of whom she adored.
Frances leaves three nieces with whom she had a special relationship: Carol Lee Dickinson, Rachel Dionne, and Kathy Brendel, and a life-long friend Lili Coffyn.
Interment will be private at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township (Delaware County), PA.
