Mrs. Vera Allen Burks
(April 11, 1916 - April 23, 2009)
VERA ALLEN HERRON BURKS was born on April 11, 1916, in Kerrville, Tennessee to the late John and Cressie Tanner Allen. She departed this life on April 23, 2009, at Whitesburg Gardens Healthcare Facility, Huntsville, Alabama.
In 1932, she united in holy matrimony to Willie Herron. He preceded her in death. On January 15, 1972, she united in holy matrimony to William Edward Burks. He, also, preceded her in death. To both of these unions no children were born.
She confessed Christ at an early age and united with St. James A.M.E. Church in Millington, Tennessee and later affiliated with the Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Her current church affiliation was with the First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama where she was a member of the Adult Women's Sunday School Class and Missionary Circle #2. She remained a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church until the decline of her health.
Mrs. Burks was employed as a salesperson at Gerber's Department Store in Memphis, Tennessee. After moving to Huntsville, Alabama in 1971, she opened a home daycare center where lots of love, care, nurturing and buttered bread was provided to a multitude of children. She retired from the home daycare business in 1999.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a sister-in-law, Eleanor Burks, a brother-in-law, Zebedee Hill, a host of nephews, nieces, special friends and godchildren.
Funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at the First Missionary Baptist Church (3509 Blue Spring Road; Huntsville, Alabama 35810) with Dr. Julius R. Scruggs officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Mrs. Burks will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, April 27, 2009 from 12:00 Noon - 9:00 p.m.; Tuesday, April 28, 2009 from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
