Duane Hunter, age 75, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, December 26, 2013, in Sioux Falls, SD.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation with family present will be Monday, December 30, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Tuesday morning one hour prior to the service.

Duane Hunter, son of Raymond and Esther (King) Hunter, was born on July 5, 1938, in Davison County near Mitchell, SD.

Following his formal education Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 20, 1955. On July 19, 1958, Duane married Solveig Kristiansen in Palo Alto, CA. Following his honorable discharge on July 2, 1959, they moved to Huron.

Duane sold insurance for many years. He later worked at Armour & Company in Huron until 1986 when he moved to Sioux Falls where he worked as a USDA inspector at John Morrell & Company for 11 years. In 1997 Duane retired from John Morrell and returned to Huron.

He enjoyed looking for little treasures at garage sales and second-hand stores. Duane also loved the old western movies, reading western books, tracing his ancestry roots, and his special little dog, Sugar.

On December 27, 1980, Duane married Betty Fullen in Huron. She died on October 2, 1997.

He is survived by 9 children, Duane (Suzanne) Hunter, Jr. of Sioux Falls, Debbie (Steve) Quiram of Huron, and Diane (Kennedy) Ombeck of Huron, Gary (Kathy) Stahl of Huron, Robert Stahl of Huron, Andrea Stahl of Huron, Dee Dee (Ed) Wilson of Canton, Tanya (Chris) Callahan of Huron, and Ginger (Dan) Donovan of Huron; 38 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Orvey Hunter of Eagle Point, OR, and Leonard Hunter of Napa, CA; 2 sisters, Lela Wilson of California and Alice (Wayne) Leberknight of Rapid City;

He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Betty; 1 grandchild; 2 great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Beatrice Hunter and Marie Hunter.
