Marvin D. Pelzer, 70, of Griswold, IA, died Saturday morning, May 8, 2010 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA.

Marvin Dale Pelzer was born in Noble Township, Cass County, rural Lyman, IA on September 16, 1939, the son of Maurice Dale and Margaret Ellen (Shultz) Pelzer. Marvin began farming with his father at an early age and graduated from Griswold High School in 1957. He began a livestock trucking business and on February 14, 1965, married Joy Hargens at St. Johns United Church of Christ at Lyman. They lived at Grant, IA and Marvin continued to farm and truck. He was a member of the Grant City Council and the Grant Fire Department for over 25 years. After he sold his trucks, he began working for Conn Trucking in 1987. He and Joy moved to Griswold 15 years ago and he then played a huge part in maintaining and running HAIR Unlimited for Joy. He was a member of St John's UCC and had served on the Church Board as well as serving a 4 year term on the Cass County Landfill Board. Through it all, he continued to farm the land of his parents and grandparents and a few years ago it became a Century Farm and he farmed it until his health failed. Marvin enjoyed woodworking and remodeling houses and his hobbies included cooking, trapping, fishing and most importantly - his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Elmer Pont, and his sisters Marlene Taylor and Connie Sternad.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Joy of Griswold and his daughters and grandchildren, Jill and husband Mike Werner and children Creighton and Sierra of Colorado Springs, CO and Ann and husband Jeff Wright and sons Jackson, Daniel and Joseph of Sergeant Bluff, IA. Also surviving are his sister Rhonda and husband Kim Simonton of Atlantic, his step-sister Sharon Pont Bishop of Northfield, MN, his brother-in-law Bill Sternad of Omaha and his father-in-law Donald Hargens of Griswold as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. John's United Church of Christ at Lyman, Pastor Celeste Waymire officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery.
