William Bordley Clarke Sr. was born in Savannah, GA. He studied engineering at Georgia School of Technology, and upon returning to Savannah, worked as a draftsman for 4 years under a Savannah architect. He then went into partnership with architect Morton Levy as Levy and Clarke Architects.


He entered World War I and served for a year in the headquarters of the 38th Division at Camp Shelby, MS, later serving at Camp Gordon, and then transferred to the Engineers Officers Training School at Camp Humphries, VA, graduating s 2nd Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corp. At the close of WWI he was still on duty at this camp.


He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Masons and served as Worthy Grand Patron or Grand Master from June, 1922 to November 1933. He continued to be a well-respected speaker for the Masons throughout his life.


He was married to the former Elizabeth Frances Epting, and the father of two sons, William Bordley Jr, and George, all of whom survive.


He died at Hunter Field Hospital after a short illness.
