Rhode Island Governor. Born the son of Colonial President Jeremy Clarke, he was elected as a Deputy to the General Assembly, in 1667. He was again elected Deputy (1670, 72-73) and then was chosen as an Assistant, (1673-76). In 1676, he was elected as the Governor of the 6th Rhode Island Colony, serving until 1677 and went on to be the 13th in 1686 and 17th Rhode Island Colony Governor, serving until (1696-98). In addition, he was also became Deputy Governor of the Rhode Island Colony in 1700 and served in this capacity every year until his death.
