The family of Orren Pierre and Eliza (Ames) is found in the 1899 Elmer/Elmore Genealogy complied by Rev. William Johnson. Four children of this couple are listed therein: Henry Clay Payne (b.1843), Imogene (Payne) Cameron (b.1845), Frederick Wells Payne (1847-1876), and Mary Eliza Payne (b.Apr 7,1851 and d.Oct 2,1882). Finding her heavily worn stone in Arms Cemetery suggests that she was very young when she died, and, further, the style of her stone is more consistent with stones placed earlier than the 1880's. In addition, the family of Orren and Eliza is found in the 1850 census in Pomfret, Chatauqua Co,NY, and in the 1860 census in Shelburne,MA, and neither census lists a child named Mary Eliza. But the other three children are mentioned in both. So her death date as given in the Elmer Genealogy is probably incorrect, and it is surmised that her death was actually Oct 2,1852 rather than 1882, and it may be that she died shortly after or before the family arrived in Shelburne as no birth or death records can be found for her. The error in the date in the Elmer Genealogy may possibly be attributed to a misread of a stone that was already significantly worn by 1899.

Her father Orrin's Civil War enlistment is found in 1863 in Massachusetts, and the family may have returned to New York after the war. In 1880, Orrin P Payne is found in Stockton, Chatauqua Co, NY with a new wife Lucina and some younger children. But also in 1880, an "E A Payne" is found as mother-in-law in the household of W.S. and I.P. Cameron (Imogene Payne Cameron) in Jamestown, Chatauqua Co, NY. There are Chatauqua County,NY burials of O.P. Payne and, in a different cemetery, Eliza (Ames) Payne. It appears that Orrin and Eliza probably divorced.
