Mr. Gallaspy retired as co-owner of Russell's Energy Center in Ocean Springs. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Headquarters Battalion 4th Marine Division Military Police Co. He was on Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tinian, Roi Namur and in other Asian Pacific Campaigns. He was awarded the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star Medal and a Silver Star Medal. He rose from the rank of Private in 1942 to Major in 1954.

Following his service in the Korean War, he was a Staff Assistant to the Adjutant General of Mississippi. He was instrumental in establishing a work release program at Parchman Penitentiary. He was a friend of Bill W. for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Moody Gallaspy, and his parents Ruth and John Russell Gallaspy, Sr.

Survivors include daughter, MaryRuth and her husband Merrell Greenwell of Tyler, TX; daughter, Jan Walker of Ocean Springs; and son John Russell Gallaspy III and his wife Mickey of Brownsville, TN; brothers, Don Gallaspy of San Antonio, TX and Mac Gallaspy of Kosciusko; grandchildren, Bill Ballard, Paul Ballard, Guy Walker, Karen and Michael Williams, Theresia and Hawkins Dunlap, Niki and John Russell Gallaspy IV, Garland Gallaspy and five great-grandchildren.

Members of the United States Marine Corps will provide a Color Guard and 21-gun salute. Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons.
