Royal Funeral Home Obituary

Mr. Everett Booker Horton
(December 22, 1931 - June 29, 2007)

Everett B. Horton was born December 22, 1931. He was one of five siblings born to his parents, Marie Braggs and Spencer Horton. Everett B. Horton began his life in Huntsville, Alabama and entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 29, 2007.

Everett's childhood years were spent in the Pond Bee Community which presntly houses NASA at Redstone Arsenal, and the Space Camp. In his formative years life presented him the opportunity to move to Rochester, New York to be with his older sister, Odell. In Rochester, New York he attended Edison Technical High School. During his academic studies he enjoyed the sport of wrestling, and developed a great love for art (drawing, wood carving, and sculpturing). At this early teenage stage in his life Everett knew he wanted to have a stable job, and be married with a family, and as fate would have it just like out of a Hollywood script, or Fairytale. Everett went back to Huntsville, Alabama while in Jr. High School visiting family; little did he know he would meet his wife to be at a County Fair "Thelma" (his future wife). Somewhere in his conversations with her, he was overheard saying, "he was one day going to marry her". He again returned back to Rochester, New York to complete his education.
After graduating high school he found himself joining the Army. He served his Country in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged after two years of service. He then traveled back to his hometown (Huntsville) always remembering the beautiful young girl at the County Fair (Thelma Johnson). After a short courtship he asked Thelma to marry him in 1953 and returned back to Rochester to begin married life.

Everett found employment in Rochester, New York with the Gerber Company. Then later moved on to work for RT French's, where he spent the next twenty-five years of employment. During this time Everett, and Thelma were blessed with three beautiful sons, Donald Spencer, Everett Carlos, and Ronald Lamar. Everett's favorite term for them was "my three sons".

In later years Everett and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1975. He worked for a period of time for Martin Brower, and then moved on to Kmart until his final year of retirement in 1997. During his years of retirement he continued to enjoy being with family and traveling. Simply living the life of "riley". Sadly in March of 2001, he lost his wife, Thelma. Although this was a hard time for him, he perservered and held on to his faith, which grew stronger. With the love of his sons, and grandchildren, Everett continued to keep his spirits high. He believed in living and loving life.

Retirement gave him the freedom to enjoy his passion of creating art. Everett studied art under the world renound Norman Rockwell, at Rockwell Studio (in Rochester). In recent years some of his art work has been displayed in government buildings, Cynthia Horton's Christian Bookstore, (Washington, D.C.), and at Red Lobster (Atlanta, GA.). Everett's art work has been in numerous art shows throughout Atlanta, GA. Many times he was offered money for his gifted work, but always refrained from selling them.

Towards the end of his journey Everett moved to Maryland with his son, Everett Carlos, Cynthia (his wife), and sons. Everett Carlos, known to his family as Carl, dedicated the past three years of taking care of his father.

Everett B. Horton was a loving and caring son, husband, and father. He will be greatly missed by his three sons, Donald Spencer (Zelika) Horton of Atlanta, GA, Everett Carlos Horton of Bowie, MD, and Ronald Lamar (Doreatha) Horton of Huntsville, AL; his two sisters, Edith Watkins and Dolores Slaughter (Manuel); his three sisters-in-law, Doris Mullens, Eunice (Theodore) Clay and Eartis J. Branch all of Huntsville, AL, his two brothers-in-law, Shedward Johnson of Chicago, IL and P'Earl (Roberta) Johnson of East Point, GA; seven grandchildren, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins and friends.

Everett B. Horton will forever be remembered and cherished...we love you always!

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2007 at the Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church (1919 Brandontown Road, N.W., Huntsville, Alabama 35816) with Pastor David Miller officiating. Interment will be held in the Glenwood Cemetery. Mr. Everett Booker Horton will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.
