He was the pilot of a B-24 bomber in the 781st Bombardment Squadron, 465th Bombardment Group (H), 15th Air Force. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on May 30, 1944 on a mission over enemy territory.
