Little has been discovered about Joseph, probably compounded by his rather young death at the age of 35 years. His death in 1822 precluded the establishment of the Latter Day Saints, thus he likely died with his Quaker faith unchanged. (Spouse turned mormon after his death). An article appeared in "The Village Record" about a winter flood in February of 1822, where "Joseph Downing, of Downingtown, was able to rescue his cattle from the flood". I'm not sure if this is the correct Joseph Downing, but if it is, could this winter flood event have contributed to his death in July of the same year? Possible.

His parents were Thomas Downing (1758-1829) and Sarah Smith (1765-1835) of Uwchlan Township, PA, but I have been unable to locate the parent's gravesites.
