Epaphras Lord Phelps, also known as Onasquesakon. Originally a school teacher from the United States, he taught a school in Long Point, Blenheim and in Brant's Mohawk village; later, from 1800 to 1812, he was Joseph Brant's white secretary. He was trusted enough by Brant to be granted power of attorney for the Six Nations. The name Onasquesakon derives from "onas," a native word for quill or pen. He was given a plot of land which later became the Phelps tract, in what is now Mount Pleasant, Ontario, Canada.

Epaphras Lord Phelps probably knew Joseph Brant in the USA. They both came from Connecticut. Brant was pro British and after the revolutionary war in the US it was time to move. The British gave a large land grant to a group of Natives. This was under the direction of Joseph Brant. Brant came to Canada and Epaphras was his secretary. Epaphras was the son of a continental army (US) captain. In 1804 Brant gave Epaphras a land grant of 1000 acres with a 999 year lease at nominal rent. Epaphras married Esther Hill who was a Mohawk, probably in about 1796. They appear to have had six children, but we only know about the following ones: Solomon Lord, Lydia and Hiram. The war of 1812 was starting and Epaphras was an American sympathizer. He was convicted by the British of High Treason. In about 1811/12 he fled to the US with help apparently from the Mohawks. He left with Lydia, the other children stayed with Esther. He died in Washington County Indiana. The Barber genealogy says that he "went to Indiana and soon entered the army and later received a commission as a captain.
