FERDINAND C. SCHMIDT PASSES AWAY AT LOCAL HOSPITAL AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS WITH PNEUMONIA
MR. AND MRS. SCHMIDT WERE MARRIED 66 YEARS
CELEBRATED ANNIVERSSARY LAST SUMMER WITH MANY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES PRESENT; SERVED WITH THE WISCONSIN INFANTRY IN THE CIVIL WAR; CAME HERE IN 1907
After an illness of several-weeks-duration, which started with an attack of pneumonia, Ferdinand C. Schmidt passed away at his home east of St. Mary's Hospital Monday evening, and thus Ladysmith's corps of veterans of the Civil War dwindles from 4 to 3.
Deceased lacked only two months of being 88 years of age at the time of his death and up until his recent illness had always enjoyed good health despite his advanced age.
Born at Fuerstenfelde, Germany, February 22, 1945, Mr. Schmidt came to America with his parents when about two years of age, the family settling at Lomira, Wisconsin.
Here he grew to young manhood and enlisted in the 45th Wisconsin Infantry, then fighting with the Union forces in the Civil War, during the year of 1864. After about a year's service he was given an honorable discharge for the service and returned to St. Charles, Minn., to make his home. The following year he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Diebold.
The family resided in different Minnesota localities until 1897, when they moved to a farm near Pennington, making that their home until 1907, when they came to Ladysmith.
Eleven children were born to this union, four of whom have preceded their father in death. Those surviving, in addition to the wife, Mrs. Margaret Schmidt, are Wilfred F. Schmidt, Ladysmith; Arthur C., of Ranier, Minn.; Alfred R., of Milwaukee; Herbert H., of Great Falls, Montana; Emil A., of Minneapolis; and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur E. Foster, of Chippewa Falls, and Mrs. Wm. Lundberg, of Los Angeles, California; also one brother, John Schmidt, of St. Charles, Minn., and a sister, Mrs. Anna Goettel, of Blue Earth, Minn.; twenty-six; grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary the past summer, at which time many friends and relatives were present to enjoy the occasion with them. Over 70 years ago he united with the German Evangelical Church and maintained his membership therein until the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held in the Christian Church Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, with Rev. Clarke and Rev. Aiken conducting the rites. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
