Bertha Marie Bryant was the daughter of James Martin Bryant and Calestine B Ridnour. She was born on 13 Mar 1902 in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Bertha had a very short marriage to a man named Elliot before 1920 that resulted in the birth of her daughter, Juanita Kathleen Elliot. Then on 12 Sep 1924, she married William D "Bill" Pope. Most records for Juanita show her name as Pope. The 1930 census is an exception. Bill, Bertha and Juanita Elliot are living with Bertha's parents. (There are actually two 1930 census for Bill and Bertha and it is clear that it is the same people) It is unclear if she was formally adopted or just assumed his name. Early on Bill was a Mule driver in the coal mines but became a barber before 1930. He had a high school education which was quite something in the day. Bill died from cerebral hemorrhage, as had his mother, when he was just 53. This was 2 Jan 1949 in Harlan.

Bertha worked as a saleslady in a retail store after Bill died. She would remarry a couple of years later (4 Nov 1952) to Millard J Adams. It was a "third marriage" for both and both were widowed.

Millard died in 1981. Bertha stayed in the Harlan County area and died on 1 Jan 1999 in Harlan County. She decided to go back to the last name of Pope and is buried as Bertha Bryant Pope.
