At 81 years of age, born in Shanghai, China, to Johannes and Elena (Ilinsky) Hansen, he succumbed to the C.O.P.D. he had battled for the last 4 years.

Erik was preceded in death by his brother Valdemar and his sister Eva Fenton.

Five of Eva's remaining children and her grandchildren live in Dallas, Texas, and in Seattle, Washington.

Erik spent most of his working life with the U.S. Postal Service, in San Francisco, starting as a carrier and retiring as a Supervisor in 1989 after 30 years.

He had no children with his first wife, Evelyn, who predeceased him.

His second marriage to Madeline who survived him netted him the bonus family of step-children ... with step-granddaughters ... and a step-grandson.

With his long-time friend Mark (Julene) English by his side these last few months he kept doing some of the things he wanted to do.

He didn't stop for a minute, adding to his already exciting, adventurous life.

Erik made friends easily and kept in contact with them for years.

His dogs were some of his best friends over the years and he was well known by hikers in Brionnes and other dog parks around town.

None of us were ready for him to go but it progressed very rapidly.

Plans for a memorial have not yet been formulated by the family.
