Carrie Belle Absher Ponder, 94, a long time resident of Clare Bridge in Asheville, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2006. She had been staying in memory care facilities while meeting the many challenges of Alzheimer's for eleven years.
Carrie was born in Cullman County, Ala. on Feb. 11, 1912, and lived most of her life in North Alabama. After the death of her husband, Hoyett Ponder in 1988, she moved to Cullowhee to be near her son and his family.
Until the onset of Alzheimer's, she was an outstanding wife, mother, grandmother, church worker, homemaker, cook, housekeeper, gardener, seamstress, and self-directed learner. She enjoyed travel and adventure. She sought out new recipes, clothing styles, and home decorating ideas. Her home decorating and floral arranging were near professional in quality. She excelled at helping others and at being a lifelong helpmate to her husband, Hoyett.
She was preceded in death by all seven of her siblings, Olive Absher of Cullman, Ala., Hilda Murdock of Enterprise, Ala., Emery Absher of Girard, La., Frank Absher of San Diego, Calif., Helen Parker of Hanceville, Ala., Betty Jarrell of Huntsville and Florence, Ala., and Arthur Absher of Lakeland, Fla., as well as her special cousin, Elaine Ryan Linton of Gardendale, Ala.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hoyt and Lora Ponder of Asheville, formerly of Cullowhee, and by her three grandchildren, Thomas Kirby Ponder of Charleston, S.C., Katherine Belle (Kay) Ponder of Asheville and Madeleine Ponder of Tyrone, Ga., who were the lights of her life. They all, in return, loved and appreciated her.
She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jade, and Avery Ponder. She delighted in little children, and they held a special place in her heart. She was a dear aunt to her nieces and nephews whom she treasured, and they loved and appreciated her. She was a special person to her many caregivers and will be greatly missed at Clare Bridge.
A special memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Clare Bridge of Asheville, 4 Walden Ridge Drive, to celebrate her life. All friends are invited.
The family will receive from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the home of her son, Hoyt Ponder, 11 Prairie Path, Asheville.
A memorial service will be held in Alabama at the Absher family reunion on March 25. Interment will be at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, Ala., where her beloved husband is buried.
Asheville Area Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting the family.
