John Richard Ferren was the sixth of fourteen children born to Sarah Amanda Smith (1854-1936) and William Peyton Ferren (1850-1921). His father changed the family surname to FARRELL sometime after 1871 due to a presumed problem with the law. All of William's children assumed the FARRELL surname, except John Richard, who enlisted on the army during the Spanish/American War and eventually died in Arizona from severe burns he suffered when his clothing accidentally caught on fire. His wife, Violet P. Howery Ferren died in Oregon, where most of their descendants live to this day - probably unaware of their "Farrell" relatives living in the eastern US.

Note: His surname appears to be misspelled on his tombstone. It should be Ferren rather than Ferrin.
