DECATUR - Harrington Clanahan "Hank" Haynes died suddenly in his home on Friday (Oct. 16, 1998). Services will be held in J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with visitation 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Illini Cemetery.

Hank was born March 9, 1929, in White Hall the son of H.C. and Dorris English Haynes. He graduated from White Hall High School and Central Technical Institute in Kansas City, Mo. On May 29, 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Janet Walker.

Hank, his wife Janet and their 3-month old twin sons moved to Decatur in June of 1953, when he took a job as engineer at WSOY AM & FM. In a very few years he added talking to his engineering duties, and acquired an early morning radio show and a nickname, "Happy Hank." He made numerous appearances around Central Illinois including pancake-eating contests, fall festivals, Toys for Tots drives and the Salvation Army Radiothon. Hank retired from WSOY in 1985.

A lifelong musician and band leader, Hank sang and played numerous instruments, including banjo, trumpet, trombone and tuba. He passed his love of music on to his five sons, with whom he performed all over Central Illinois in groups such as The Happy Heirs, The Bearsdale Municipal Band, The Bearsdale German Band and The Over The Hill Gang with Dink Welch and Velma Weber. He served as the last president of the American Federation of Musicians local 89 in Decatur.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; son, Michael and wife Cheri of Minnetonka, Minn.; son, Brian and wife Dawn of Eagan, Minn.; son, Father Connor and wife Anita of Burlington, N.J.; son, Patrick and wife Karen of Robbinsdale, Minn.; eight grandchildren; boyhood friend, Jules Robinett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Michael L. "Unk" Haynes and one son, Daniel N. Haynes.
