Eugene Aroe Petersen was born on
July 4, 1913 in rural Providence Township
in Buena Vista County to Andrew
H. Petersen and Ivo M. Aroe Petersen.
He was baptized and confirmed in the
Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Gene
attended all 12 years of schooling at
Providence Consolidated School, graduating
in 1931.

On Aug. 13, 1939 he
married Laura LaVada Miller in the
Sulphur Springs Church in Sulphur
Springs. To this union were born three
children, Leah, Jon and Donald. The
couple engaged in farming in the Newell
area until retirement in 1974. At this
time they moved to Phoenix, Ariz, where
they managed apartment complexes until
moving into the Odd Fellow Towers
Retirement Complex. The last couple of
years found him battling Alzheimer's
disease and it finally became necessary
for him to move to the Camelot Nursing
Home.

He was an active member of the
Newell 100F #232 Lodge, the
Sunnyslope 100F#17, the Encampment
#86 Storm Lake, and the NFO Organization
of Buena Vista County. He enjoyed
playing cards, reading and having
a good time in life.

He was preceded in death by his
parents and his brother, Ralph.

He is survived by his wife, LaVada
Petersen of Phoenix, Ariz.; three children,
Leah Franzmeier of Newell, Jon
and Donna Petersen of Phoenix, Ariz,
and Don and Joan Petersen of Phoenix,
Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven greatgranchildren;
a host of relatives and
friends. He will be greatly missed.
