"Moses, Long, Sr. entered at the age of 16 years, the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry in the spring of 1777, and served three years to 1780. His regiment was sent to New York and was stationed for a time at Fort Stanwix. He was at the surrender of Burgoyne the October following and passed the terrible winter at Valley Forge. In June 1778, he participated in the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey. His regiment was known as "the Cape Ann Regiment - Division of Genral Charles Lee. He was one of 16 men who acted as Washington's body guard the night after the Battle of Monmouth."
