Was a member of the famous 7th Calvary under Gen. George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He was with the pack train and survived.
Enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 22 September 1875
At the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was in Company L, led by Custer's brother-in-law James Calhoun. Company L did not survive that day. The reason Marshall did, was initially the fact that each Company had designated a few men to remain and help with the pack train. Marshall was one of these chosen few. He did fight on Reno Hill with Benteen, Reno and Weir when they got the pack train up.
