Janet Katherine Bates was born to Elizabeth and Herman Kuss in River Falls, Wisconsin on October 27, 1932. She graduated from River Falls High School in 1950 where she played saxophone in the band. Jan married Lawrence R. Bates, from Cashton WI, and a University of Wisconsin Graduate, in 1952 at the Jacksonville Florida Naval Air Station. She worked as a bookkeeper at Riverside Body Company in Florida, and in Owatonna, as a Welcome Wagon Representative, Cedar Valley Services as a bookkeeper, Sklars Furniture as a sales person, and Owatonna Parks and Recreation as a bookkeeper, coordinator and scheduler. She retired in 1993. Janet was a member of the Council of Catholic Women, a Cub Scout Leader, a member of the Owatonna Sports Boosters and Owatonna Basketball Association. She wintered in Brownsville Texas at the Winterhaven Resort for 20 years. She served as an officer on the Home Owners Association of the Retirement community there. A lover of music, Jan enjoyed jazz. She was an avid sports fan, swimmer and seamstress.
She is survived by husband Lawrence; six children: Stephen Bates (Gail) of Prescott, WI, Barbara Bates-Wurst (Dan) of Faribault, MN, Susan Shapiro (Jonathan) of Plano, TX, Alan Bates (Penny) of Shorewood MN, Phillip Bates (Trisha) of Carver MN, and Bruce Bates of Eagan MN. The grandchildren are: Stephen Bates, Mary Getzlaff, Erin Christey, Joseph Christey, Jeffrey Shapiro, Lauren Shapiro, Madison Bates, Hunter Bates, Beau Bates, Bentley Bates, Davis Bates, and Annabelle Bates, and 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Wayne (Mary Sue) Kuss, Wausau, WI, Donald (Betsy) Kuss, Wausau, WI, and sister-in-law, Ruth Kuss, River Falls, WI,
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Herman Kuss, and her brothers, Jack Kuss, Roger Kuss, and Phil Kuss.
Jan suffered for 56 years with lymphedema and fought a very difficult battle with cancer. Memorials can be made in her name to the National Lymphedema Network, the American Cancer Society or the Owatonna Homestead Hospice House.
