Provided in an email to Gail Fisher Walker dated June 30, 2020: Suggested edit: Lindsey George married Elizabeth Thornton on 30 Sep 1834 in PIttsylvania County, Virginia. "Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1740-1850," database, Ancestry.com Operations Inc., (Provo, Utah) accessed 29 Jun 2020, entry for Lindsey George, Elizabeth W. Thornton, 1834, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In addition, he was involved in a lengthy Chancery Court case over land Elizabeth Thornton's father had willed to his wife and after her death to his heirs. Therefore, her surname was not Bibb unless he married again.

Reply by Gail Fisher Walker dated 7.14.2020 to Toby's Find A Grave page: Hello Toby. You suggested that Mr George's wife's surname was not Bibb. This interesting. I went back to look at the gravestones again and Elizabeth's says Bibb. It is immediately next to Mr George's gravestone and states "Wife of Lindsey George". He was born in 1806, she in 1821 so he was 15 years older than she. If that is her in the marriage records, she would have only been 13ish when they married (1834). That is young but possible. It is possible that the couple in the marriage records is not this couple. It is possible that she remarried to a Bibb after Lindsey's death. I will be happy to post your suggestion. I don't seem to find that Find A Grave posted your suggestion.

Lindsey George married Elizabeth Thornton on 30 Sep 1834 in Pittsylvania County, VA. See "Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1740-1850," database, Ancestry.com Operations Inc., (Provo, Utah) accessed 29 Jun 2020, entry for Lindsey George, Elizabeth W. Thornton, 1834, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

In Feb 1840, here was a suit in Chancery between Greenberry Thornton and Livingston P. Noell (husband of Louisa), wherein Greenberry agreed to buy a piece of land which obviously had been Rowland's, and to deliver portions of the purchase price in like manner to himself, Thomas, Livington P. Noell, Linday George (husband of Elizabeth), Jacob L. King (husband of Jane), James Thornton, and William Clanton (husband of Polly). No mention is made of their mother, Elizabeth, so she must have been deceased. See "Thornton: Branches to Westward," Richard Thornton Fox, typescript, 13 Apr 2000, sent by author, Library of Toby Turner, Houston, Harris County, Texas, Chapter Seven, page 55; citing Pittsylvania Court Order Book 35, pages 233-236.

I found a marriage record for Lindsey George and Elizabeth J. Bibb for 19 Jan 1848 in Madison County, Alabama. See "Alabama, Select Marriage Indexes, 1816-1942," database, Ancestry.com Operations Inc, (Provo, Utah) accessed 15 Jul 2020, entry for Lindsey George and Elizabeth J. Bibb, 1848, Madison County, Alabama.

The 1840 census only indicates Elizabeth Thornton was born between 1811 and 1820 when she appears to have been enumerated with LIndsey George. I suspect she died in childbirth.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I had not realized Lindsey married a second time.

Toby Turner
