Irvin Raymond Byrum, 68, Huntington Beach, Calif., died May 6, 1974, in California. Born in Jackson township, Ind., April 24, 1906, he spent the first 21 years of his life on the family farm near Union City. He is a graduate of the Jackson High School. Graduating from DePauw University in 1929, Mr. Byrum taught for three years and was principal for nine years of the Huntsville High School. He received his M.S. in education at the University of Southern California in 1937. In the early 1940's he began a 22-year career as a civil engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers, District of Los Angeles. During this time he did graduate study at M.I.T., Harvard and Berkeley, became a registered professional engineer and assistant professor of civil engineering at California State University, Los Angeles.

Survivors include his widow, Mary Thuma Waters Byrum, former Saratoga resident; three children, Irvin Jr., Mrs. Pauline Mann and Robert, all of California; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Letha Noffsinger and Mrs. Henry Runkle of Union City, and four brothers, Russell Byrum of Winchester and George, Paul and Ermal Byrum of California. One son died in 1967.
