WATERBURY — Mr. Edmund J. VanPelt, 82, of Wakelee Road, formerly of Newtown, passed away on Dec. 18, 2013. He was the husband to Gayle (Costanzo) VanPelt for 24 years.

Edmund was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Cunningham) VanPelt. He attended Bellows High School in Mamaroneck, N.Y., where he is remembered for his track record for the one half-mile racing time of: 1:57.7. He was very active and athletic with swimming, running, dancing, love of music, dancing and living life. He was also a fan of all sports.

He joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country honorably for 12 years in Korea and Japan. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Gayle Van Pelt. He is also survived by three children, Debbie Duffy of New York, Raymond Stevens of Middletown, and Christopher L. Stevens of Florida; a grandchild, Trisha Blank of New Milford; 16 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott. Friends may gather from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
