Joseph Robbins
Joseph Samuel Robbins, 102, a past president of the Porter County Historical Society, died Wednesday at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
A lifelong resident of Portage Township, except for the past two years when he lived in Valparaiso, Robbins was a member of the Duneland Historical Society and First Presbyterian Church. One of the first graduates of
Portage Township Schools, he attended Morgan Park Military Academy and Valparaiso and Purdue Universities.
He was the postmaster in McCool, and also farmed, was a subdivder and a merchant in Gary.
Robbins was born April 30, 1881, the son of Lewis and Mary E. (Stacy)Robbins. On June 18, 1907 he married Gertrude Lenburg, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Ruth Robbins and Marjorie Herren of Valparaiso and Lauretta McDonald of New Castle; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services 11 a.m. Saturday at Bartholomew Funeral Home; the Rev. E. Allen Campbell officiating; burial in Robbins Cemetery, Portage Township; visitation 2 to 8 p.m. Friday; memorial to Robbins Cemetery Association.
