Mary Kerby was adopted by Jonathan and Elizabeth Harmon Plott. She was born around Webster Co., NC, and the Plotts adopted her when she was about ten years old. No further information is known on her family. Mary married James Anderson Inman February 22, 1843, in Haywood Co., NC. They had ten children. Mary, or Polly, as she was called, had to take care of the family while Anderson Inman was serving the Confederacy in the Civil War. He was captured near Cumberland Gap and spent nearly two years in Camp Douglas in IL.
Mary Inman was a midwife for her community in Haywood County, NC. She had a little mule that she rode sidesaddle when she went on her calls. She delivered well over 100 babies. She grew many of her remedies for various ailments in her own garden patch.
Mary Kerby Inman died May 25, 1917, and she is buried at the Inman Chapel Cemetery in Haywood Co., NC.
