Fred H. Sherman, 96, 705 S.E. 86th avenue, one of the early captains on the Columbia river steamers, died Sunday. Service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Gable's Sunrise chapel. Born December 10, 1857, in Germany, Mr. Sherman came to this country and Oregon in 1860 and remained in the area all his life. In 1879 he started work on the Columbia river as a deckhand. A few years later he became a captain and was master of several of the one-time excursion boats.

Survivors include his widow, Lois Adnah; two sisters, Mrs. Zetta Thing of Seaside and Mrs. Nellie McGowan of Pasadena, Cal. , and several nieces and nephews.
