US Congressman. Elected to represent North Carolina as At-Large in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1801 until his death in 1802. He also served as a Delegate to the Continental Congress from North Carolina in 1781, and 1784 to 1785, and Member of the North Carolina State Senate from 1781 to 1784, 1788 to 1790, and again in 1792.
