Politician and Revolutionary War Officer. After serving his state as a member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress in 1775 and 1776, he began serving his country in a greater cause, the Revolutionary War. He first served as a major in the Pasquotank Minutemen and later as a lieutenant colonel in Gregory's Continental regiment. After the war he was elected to represent North Carolina in the 4th and 5th US Congress from 1795 to 1799.
