Mrs. Marion "Betty" Uzzell Boyd, 91, formally of Statesville, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013, in Lake Zurich, Illinois. Born January 1, 1922 in Atlantic City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward Foy Uzzell and Marian Gunter Uzzell. She was a graduate of Atlantic City High School, Arlington Jr. College in Virginia, and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York, N.Y. In her earlier years, she was a civilian employee of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
On June 27, 1946, she married Simmons Pressly Boyd of Statesville who died in 1991.
Betty was a member of the First A.R.P. Church in Statesville where she had been a member of the Walker Bible Class and the Gladys Marshburn Circle. After marrying Mr. Boyd, she served as Deputy Clerk of Superior Court in Statesville before retiring following 20 years of service. She was also a former Pink Lady at Iredell Memorial Hospital and served as unit director of the American Cancer Society for 13 years. She was a former Den Mother for Cub Scouts and a member of the Toil and Tan Garden Club.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Watt Boyd; one sister, Mary Jane Uzzell Sproch; two brothers, Edward Foy Uzzell Jr. and John Havelock Gunter Uzzell.
Mrs. Boyd is survived by two sons, Simmons Pressly Boyd, Jr. and wife, Sylvia, of Statesville and Edward Randolph "Randy" Boyd and wife, Helen, of Lake Zurich, Ill.; one sister, Joanne Uzzell Renninger of Tallahassee, Fla. There are six grandchildren, Jeff Boyd (Tara) of Statesville, N.C., Andy Mayfield (Donna), Trinity, NC, Brian Boyd (Ginger) of Newton, N.C., David Boyd (Amber) of Cary, Ill., Michael Boyd and Megan Boyd, both of Lake Zurich, Ill. Thirteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Betty Boyd will be conducted 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 18, 2013, in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Jeffries and Rev. John E. Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the funeral hour.
