Rachel Mae Perry, 87, died Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Wake Med. She was born on September 6, 1926 in Wake County to the late Walter Allen Perry and Nannie Lou Bunn Perry.
Rachel was a 1943 graduate of Wakelon High School and went on to graduate from Hardbarger Business College. She had a long and distinguished career in state government. Rachel worked for the NC Highway Department from 1953 to 1962 and became the Secretary to the Director of the NC Parole Commission, retiring in 1990 after 39 years of service. She received numersous awards during her career - including the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - awarded in 1990 by Governor Jim Martin. Her life was one of service to family, the state and her beloved church - Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church where she sang in the adult choir.
The public viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday December 19, 2013 at Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 11;00 am with Reverand Eal Roach officiating. The burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside service.
Rachel was preceded in death by her Mother, Father and ten siblings. She is survived by her special friend of over 50 years: Simon Rogers; nieces: Louise Baker Gaddy, Sandra Perry Johnson, and Vicky Gordan Martin; nephews: Ronald Warren "Tom" Perry; Gerald Wayne Perry; Roy Basil Perry; Ronnie Strother Perry; Sonny Maxwell Perry, Jr. Jimmy Walter Perry, and Danny Rolan Gordon, sister-in-law; Mildred Strother Perry; and a brother-in-law; Sonny Maxwell "Bud" Perry, Sr.
The family would like to thank Doris Bass, Renee Moore, and B. K. Barham for their undivided attention and care to Rachel during the last several years.
