Donald Bauer
Donald William Bauer, 86, of Oakdale and formerly of Lodi, died Jan. 29 at an Oakdale convalescent hospital. He was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Lodi.

Mr. Bauer attended Lodi schools and graduated from Lodi High School, where he played football as a quarterback.

He served in the National Guard for two years and then in the U.S. Army for three years, where he was an aid to Barney Hagen, a former football coach from Lodi High School. He was a World War II Veteran and served in England, France, Germany, and Hawaii from 1940-45.

He was a turkey rancher in Sonora from 1947-63, and then was employed by A.L. Gilbert Co. in Oakdale as a truck driver for 35 years.

He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oakdale. He was an avid 49er fan, and he enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting, fishing, and restoring ChrisCraft wooden boats. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and helping people.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Linde, of Oakdale; sons, John Bauer, of Sonora, and James Bauer, of Milton; daughter, Susan Gilbreath, of Lodi; half-sister, Deane Burch, of Sacramento; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Oakdale Memorial Chapel, 830 West F Street, Oakdale. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the memorial chapel. Burial will be private at Lodi Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
