English Politician. He was a 17th-century English politician, who supported the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War and was president of the Council during the Commonwealth. He was a wealthy draper in Dorchester who became a bailiff in 1630 and the town Mayor in 1635. When, on April 1, 1640, after a period of 11 years of personal rule, King Charles I recalled parliament, he was elected MP for Dorchester. However, the King dissolved this "short parliament" after only 3 weeks as they refused to provide the King with money he wanted. In September of 1640, when writs were issued by the King, summoning a parliament to convene on November 3, 1640 he was once again elected MP for Dorchester. When the Civil War broke out a couple of years later, he supported the Parliamentary cause and was a sufficiently hardline anti-Royalist to retain his seat in the Rump after Pride's Purge in 1648. As a friend of Oliver Cromwell, he was a member of the Council of State from 1649 to 1653, and was its president in 1652 and 1653. He was also elected MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in 1654 for the First Protectorate Parliament and again, two years before his death, in 1656 for the Second Protectorate Parliament.
