JOHN MAHLOCH

Collins Cobbler Mahlock, 87, Dies (photo/very dark)
John Mahlock, 87-year-old cobbler, and a charter member of the village fire department, who despite his age still continued at his trade, died Monday night of a heart attack.
Mr. Mahloch, who was known to the villagers by the more familiar German term of “schuhster” was the oldest active shoemaker in Wisconsin. He located in Collins 56 years ago. Residents for miles around traveled to Mahloch’s shop for their shoe needs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. Peters Lutheran church. The Rev. W. T. Weyland will officiate and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Mahloch was born in Rhine, Sheboygan County, in 1865. At the age of 14, he left his father’s farm and learned the shoemaker’s trade in a Sheboygan factory. He also worked at Plymouth and School Hill at the trade.
In 1896 he located a shop in the village, the same year the Soo railroad was built between Manitowoc and Neenah.
When the volunteer fire department was organized in the village, Mr. Mahloch was a member. When the fire bell sounded he dropped his shop work and hurried to the fire hall to join other volunteers answering the calls.
The aged cobbler always enjoyed talking about the old days when a pound of shoe leather cost only 27 cents and his starting wages were $12 a month “plus room, board and shoes.”
There was no 40 hour week for Mr. Mahloch in those days. He recalled working six weeks in a row without getting to bed before 2 a.m. except Sundays, when he was too tired to do anything but sleep all day.
Mr. Mahloch completed over 70 years in the shoe business, counting hisapprentice days. He was honored by the village firemen when he completed 50 years as a member of the department.
Mr. Mahloch married Miss Mary Robert in 1886 and 10 years later they moved to Collins. His wife died in 1938.
Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Lily Klann of Reedsville, Mrs. William Anhalt of Valders and Mrs. Emma Fluhr of Kiel; three sons, Edward of Collins, John Jr., of Sheboygan and Walter of Manitowoc; sister, Mrs. Henrietta Gerloch of Elkhart Lake; and 24 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Berge Funeral Home, Valders, after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The casket will be moved to the church at 10 am. Thursday.
