Hugh Baker Morton was the son of Dr. John Edwin Morton Jr. and Ellen Malvina Baker Morton. He was born in Charleston, Utah. His parents had previously lost a son and a daughter, so they were thrilled when Hugh was born.

In 1908 he moved with his parents to Kaysville, Utah where his dad built the 1st hospital in Kaysville (see Dr. John Edwin Morton Jr.)

When Hugh was 10 1/2 years old he accidently drowned in a local irrigation pond. Hugh is buried next to his parents in the Kaysville Cemetery.

Newspaper article: Davis County Clipper June 24, 1910 Deaths at Kaysville - Dr. Morton's little son drowned

"Hugh Morton the ten year old son of Dr. and Mrs. Morton was drowned today in the Kaysville Irrigation Company reservoir which is located just a little north of the Kaysville Brick yard.

He and a number of his little companions went there to bath. They all came out and started home when he and Samuel Hanson's boy went back to the pond and went in again. Soon after the hanson boy overtook the crowd and told the boys that Hugh had either been drowned or was hiding.

In a few minutes the news spread and a hundred or more people were at the reservoir looking for the body which was finally found by Lambert Blamires in about 8 feet of water.

The father and Dr. Grant tried for a long time to resuscitate him but it was decided that he must have been dead a couple of hours. This is so very sad as this is the doctor's last child, they having buried six children.
