Received a knighthood in Ireland from the Earl of Essex. At Edgehill he fought under the 3rd Earl of Essex, afterwards being made Governor of Gloucester. As a regicide his estates were especially exempted from the general pardon after the Restoration. After the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, his body was exhumed from the abbey and re-interred in a communal burial pit in St Margaret's Churchyard, Westminster.
