DIMMITT - Sgt. Jacob "J.J." Dones, 21, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, in Base Camp Hit, Iraq.
Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. and vigil will be at 7 p.m. today in Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Lupe Mayorga and the Rev. Ken Keller officiating. Burial will be in Castro County Memorial Garden.

J.J. was born March 5, 1984, in Dimmitt. He graduated from Dimmitt High School in 2002, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was currently serving in the Army as a sergeant. He served in Operation Enduring Freedom and in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, CID, Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was an Expert Infantry Rifleman (EIB).

Survivors include his father, Danny Dones of Dimmitt; his mother, Rosa Dones of Amarillo; his fiancee, Mindy LeAnn Gonzales and daughter, Alyssa Monique Gonzales, both of California; two brothers, Daniel Dones and Jason James Dones, both of Abilene; two sisters, Jessica Ramirez of Dimmitt and Priscilla Rojas of North Carolina; paternal grandparents, George Dones and Maria Estella Layva; maternal grandparent, Guadalupe Ramirez; six nieces and nephews; and his family and friends.
