IN MEMORIAM.
Mrs. J. Slaughter, formerly Miss Mary J. Poor, was born in Christian county, Kentucky, August 27, 1821; moved to Marion county, Missouri, when a child, but finally settled in Knox county, where she lived and died, April 4, 1904. She was married to Robert Slaughter in 1846. She was the mother of eight children, three of whom are living — one daughter and two sons. Her husband and five children preceded her to the great beyond. She was a member of the Baptist church for sixty years. The Christian life of Sister Slaughter was noble. Rigid in her own scrupolous conformity to high Christian duty; resolutely refusing to have any part in worldly compromises and methods, which are becoming so fashionable. She was always tenderly considerate for individual frailties; kind and helpful in word and work; deeply interested in the work of her church and active in all missionary work. Her only care was to have the Lord's work done as thoroughly as possible. She was careful and charitable in judgment, sincere and earnest in all things, being a help and never a hinderance to others. It is of such that we say: To live is Christ; to die is gain. For her it is heaven we all know, but for us it a great grief for we realize how much we need the help of just such as this beloved mother. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Humphrey at the Baptist church April 6, after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery near by.
