Man, Hit By Auto, Dies – J. H. Rankin Succumbs to Fracture Of Skull.
Drivers of Machines Which Struck Retired Business Man to Face Charges of Reckless Driving.
J. H. Rankin retired business man of 207 Fourteenth street, who was injured by two automobiles following a collision at fourteenth and Taylor streets Wednesday, died as the result of a fractured skull at the St. Vincent's hospital yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The body was turned over to Deputy Coroner Calkins.
William Libke, 265 East Forty-fifth street, and Roe Haroun, 132 East Forty-seventh street, drivers of the two cars which struck Rankin, were arrested following the accident by Sergeant Keegan and patrolman Stanton of the traffic bureau and the two are charged with reckless driving. It is probable that the charges will not be heard in the municipal court until a coroner's jury has a chance to fix the blame.
The two drivers, according to the police, were racing for the intersection at the time of the collision. Libke is said to have driven his car into the side of Haroun's machine with such force that the latter was hurled more than 20 feet. Haroun's car struck Mr. Rankin, who was starting to cross the street, and knocked him down in the path of the Libke's automobile, which passed over his body, police say.
Mr. Rankin never regained consciousness following the accident. He had recently come to Portland from Los Angeles.
