Captain L. B. "Ben" Lovejoy was the son of Howard Bentley Lovejoy and Calista Anna (Kinney) Lovejoy. He was the younger brother of six siblings, Mrs. Emma Dyer, Mrs. Kate Love, Howard Bartlett Lovejoy, Jennie Lovejoy who died young, Mrs. Nellie Watson and Edwin O. Lovejoy.

He came from a seafaring family. His ancestors plied their trade off the coast of Maine. His father and his brother Howard were deep-sea captains based in Puget Sound, his brother Edwin was a ship builder and operator of a Puget Sound steamship line, and two of his sisters married seafaring men.

Captain Lovejoy was the skipper of Puget Sound tugboats for nineteen years, then spent 25 years as a deep-sea pilot before retiring, bringing ships in from the ocean to ports in Puget Sound.
