Schindler, Emil Jakob, b. Vienna, April 27, 1842, d. Westerland on Sylt (Germany), Aug. 9, 1892, landscape painter, father of Alma Mahler-Werfel. Since his studies at the Vienna Academy friendship with R. Ribarz and E. Jettel; study trips to Dalmatia, Venice, Holland and France. Studied Dutch landscapes from the 17th century and works by the school of Barbizon. Surrounded himself with a small circle of artists (M. Egner, T. Blau, O. Wisinger-Florian, C. Moll, T. von Hörmann, H. Darnaut); after 1885 Plankenberg Castle near Neulengbach (Lower Austria). became the favourite place of study of this school of landscape painting, which was central to Austrian impressionism.
