Joan was born in Detroit, Michigan to George Nelson Hoffman and Verna Uhrenholdt Hoffman. She spent her early childhood in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, north of Detroit.

Joan's father was a pastry chef and he moved the family to Denver, Colorado after he bought the Goodies Bakery on Colfax Avenue. The family lived nearby on Dahlia Street near Monaco. In her teenage years Joan helped out in her father's bakery after school and also worked with her Aunt Iris and her Uncle "Doc" Everette Peterson at their restaurant "The Apple Tree Shanty" on E. Colfax Avenue. In addition to being a Master baker, Joan's father was a Mason and Joan was invited to join the Rainbow Girls Masonic youth organization where she advanced to the highest position of Worthy Advisor. She graduated with honors from East High School in Denver and later attended Colorado University in Boulder where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.

While in her early twenties Joan's father sold his bakery and moved the family to Houston when he was offered the position of Bakery Plant Manager for the Weingarten Grocery chain. While in Houston Joan started her career in accounting and while working for the W.D. Hayden Company she met her future husband, Lloyd Adams. They married in 1970. In the early seventies she began working in the oil and gas industry and for most of the next forty years worked for the Getty Oil Company, its successor Texaco/Chevron, and later as a contract Division Order Analyst and Revenue Accountant for several independent oil companies.

Joan and Lloyd welcomed the birth of their son Logan Bryan Adams in 1979. Joan retired from the oil industry in 2008 and began enjoying her retirement. She was an avid reader of mystery novels and enjoyed baking and English history.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her beloved husband Lloyd and their son Logan. She will be greatly missed by her husband and son and the many friends she made in her life.

She is buried in the historic section of Morton Cemetery near her husband's parents and grandparents. There she will be joined by her beloved husband at a future time.
