Son of the late Isaac Carter and Nellie Tetstom David grew up on a cattle ranch in the rural community of Cartertown near his burial site in what is now Bacon County, GA. David first married Mahalia Lucinda Aldridge, issue; three children; Jesse, David Jefferson Jr. and Daniel Wesley. The couple later divorced. With war eminent David enlisted 10 Oct 1861 as Private in Company K, 2nd GA State Troops Regiment. He was mustered out on 10 Apr 1862. On 16 May 1862 he joined Company B, 54th GA Infantry Regiment, CSA, commanded by Captain George W Moody. He remained with the 54th through the entire war. In June of 1864 the 54th engaged Sherman's army at Kennesaw Mountain Georgia during the siege of Atlanta. David later surrendered with his unit in Tallahassee, FL and was paroled on 21 May 1865 in Thomasville, GA. After the war he married Lucretia Henderson, issue; nine children; Michael, Mary Elizabeth, Isaac, Louvina, Keziah, William, Thomas Lawton, Laura D and Minnie. He later acquired a farm on the north side of Big Hurricane Creek in what is now Bacon County, GA and lived there until his death in 1912 at the age of 78.
