HAMPTON - On Oct. 18, 2005, Lillie A. "Snookie" Bowen entered into eternal peaceful sleep. She was born in Acme, N.C. to the late Charles and Carrie Munn on Nov. 3, 1930. She graduated from East Arcadia High School in 1947. She has been a peninsula resident for 52 years, where she was an active member of Shalom Baptist Church. Mrs. Bowen believed that civic duties should be paramount in one's life and she set the example by being a past president of the Park Place Community Awareness Club. She was the president of the Mary Francis Reid Gospel Chorus for 20 years and a longtime sister of the Eastern Star Ruth, Unity Medlothain Chapter #3. Mrs. Bowen was preceded in death by her only son, Leonard C. Bowen; two sisters, Ella Munn and Annie Pearl Holden; four brothers, Harry L. Munn, James T. Munn Sr., Charles Munn Jr. and John E. Munn. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Leon Bowen; her only daughter, Anna B. Carter (James) of Atlanta, Ga.; three granddaughters, Kim Fox-Bowen, Bronte N. Ricks (Christopher Sr.) and Chamia B. Bowen, all of Hampton, Va; her daughter–in-law, Dorothy "Candy" Bowen; six great grandchildren, Ricky, Ra'shawn, Shovante', Rakim, Crista, and Christopher Jr.; two sisters, Zadie Carter of Newark, N.J. and Pauline Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.,; and a host of loving relatives and many caring friends. Viewing will begin 10 a.m. Sunday, with visitation for family and friends from 4 to 5 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th St. Newport News, Va. 23607. Funeral services will be held noon Monday, Oct. 24, at Shalom Baptist Church, 1111-24th St. with the Rev. Derrick Perkins Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
