The following is extracted from "History of the Town of Peterborough, Hillsborough County New Hampshire with the Report of the Proceedings at the Centennial Celebration in 1839", Author - Albert Smith, MD, L.L.D., John Hopkins Morison, Publisher - Press of George H Ellis, Yr 1876 - Not in Copyright

The first attempt at settlement was 1739. The Swans were mentioned as one of the large and influential families of Peterborough along with Todd, Templeton, Alld, Stuart, Cunningham, Mitchell, Ritchie and Ferguson. Most of these early families had ceased to exist or moved on by the centennial in 1839. Unfortunately, most of the early records of the town were kept at the minister's residence and were lost in a fire.
"The early settlers were principally of Scotch-Irish, who themselves immigrated from Ireland, or were the immediate descendants of same. They were not of the lower order of the European population, but were of the middling class, men considerably educated, so that they were well qualified to understand the tyrannical and exacting course pursued by their government towards them, and fully to appreciate their civil and religious rights.
In March 26, 1718, an agent was sent with a petition to Gov. Shute of Mass signed by 217. These men were rigid Presbyterians, and felt that they could not endure the exactions of Protestant England in regard to the Episcopal Church. They were not only heavily taxed, but were often involved in difficulties from their determination never to conform to their Book of Common Prayer. Besides, they could hold land only on lease and were subject to such extractions as their landlords pleased."
